Cocke. Co. student brings disabled grenade to school

A Cocke County elementary school student caused a bit of stir Thursday morning when he showed off a disabled hand grenade and a bullet to his classmates.

According to Casey Kelly, the Safety Supervisor with Cocke County Schools, the 10-year-old is a student at Parrottsville Elementary School.

He brought the de-militarized hand grenade and .50 cal round to school to show his friends.   Several students saw them on the bus, and told teachers, who informed the principal.

Right up until the second half Saturday night, the incredible momentum that energized Knoxville for the past week seemed like it might be enough to carry the Tennessee Volunteers to a victory against the Florida Gators for the first time in eight meetings.

The Vols were up 14-10 in front of a sell-out crowd of more than 102,000.

 

But then the 2nd half happened to a team that's had some memorable 2nd half meltdowns in the past few years.

Then the Gators scored 27 points.

Carson-Newman sorority sells lemonade for childhood cancer research

Gamma Sigma Sigma Sorority at the Carson-Newman College set up a fresh lemonade stand on its campus to help fund cures for childhood cancers on Saturday afternoon.

A four-year-old girl battling cancer, named Alex, created this idea more than a decade ago.

Alex's Lemonade Stand is now a national foundation. It has raised more than $45 million since it started.

Atlanta, GA (Sports Network) - Tyler Bray completed 27-of-41 passes for 333
yards and threw for two touchdowns to lead Tennessee to a 35-21 win over North
Carolina State on Friday.

Cordarrelle Patterson hauled in six balls for 93 yards and caught a touchdown
and added another score with a 67-yard run. Zach Rogers caught a 72-yard
touchdown and Rajion Neal carried the ball 22 times for 53 yards and a
touchdown for the Volunteers (1-0), who posted a disappointing 5-7
record last season.

It's the day Vol fans have been waiting for, the start of the 2012 football season.    

It's been a long offseason for the team having to dwell on a loss to Kentucky for the last eight months.

But today the Vols open up the season against NC State.

The arrived in Atlanta yesterday afternoon.

This is the first time in 73 years that the team has played a regular season game on a Friday.

The Vols will take on the Wolfpack tonight at the Georgia Dome at 7:30 p.m.

The game will be aired on ESPU-U.

Ken Sparks gets 300th win for Carson-Newman

 

It was a landmark achievement for a longtime East Tennessee football coach.

Ken Sparks has been head coach at Carson-Newman College for 32 years.

Sparks said his football career began with a promise to God to be the best coach he could be.

And Thursday night, he reached a major milestone with his 300th win. The Eagles won 56-46 over Glenville State.

Sparks celebrated with his team on the field with prayer and of course a game ball.

He was recently diagnosed with prostate cancer but has said he won't let it stop him from coaching.

Walters State Comm. College partners with ORNL

An East Tennessee community college is celebrating a new opportunity for its students.

Walters State Community College and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have created a partnership.

The agreement will allow students to work with ORNL's scientists to get hands-on experience in research and developing technologies through classroom projects and internships.
