Log homes built with modern touch in Dandridge

Log homes built with modern touch in Dandridge

Log homes have a long history in the United States and in East Tennessee.

A local company is continuing the tradition of building the houses by using modern technology.

"We've got Douglas-fir here. This is yellow pine. This is eastern white pine. Then we have some pieces of oak over here, both red and white," Jobe Leonard explained.

Most of the wood at the log home maker in Dandridge comes from trees in and around East Tennessee.

This summer, Jeff Joslin made it to the big screen.

"I play Tyler Perry's boss. I'm a federal prosecutor."

You could say he's come a long way from Cedar Bluff Elementary.

"We did the play "Rumpelstiltskin" and I had one line."

That was Joslin's first brush with acting, but, back then, he was more interested in sports.

"At age 6, I started playing football and that's all I wanted to do. I wanted to be a professional athlete."

"It's lined up for miles, just bumper to bumper. You can't get on the road, you can't turn," he said.

"You say 'wow, she's really here; she has really made it,'" John Matson recalled Friday -- just 24 hours since returning from London to watch his former student in the pinnacle of her career.

Lenior City native Claire Donahue competed in the 100 meter butterfly in the 2012 Olympics last Sunday. Friday, she helped the U.S. women's team get to the finals of the 400 meter relay.

It has been a long road to get to the London Aquatics Centre for the 23-year-old, a road that began in Blount County. That's where Matson first met Donahue more than a decade ago.

Greene County Schools to open one week late

Greene County Schools said a failed wheel tax vote is one reason why school will start late.

Students were supposed to return Wednesday, August 8.  Instead, students will not go back to school until Wednesday, August 15.

The school budget has a $1.2 Million gap.  School officials said major cuts could be made.

"...closing a school, cutting out athletics," said Greene County Director of Schools Dr. Vicki Kirk.  "There are any number of things on the list and it will take many of them to get to $1.2 million."

Hamblen Co. sheriff warns of text messaging scam

The Hamblen County sheriff is warning residents about a text messaging scam.

Sheriff Esco Jarnigan says he's had more than 500 complaints about a text people are receiving that says their bank accounts have been compromised.

He says the text prompts people to give their account numbers, and once they do, the account is wiped clean in just 10 seconds.

The sheriff says his department has told the FBI about the scam.

He says it's good to remember never to give out your personal information unless it's face-to-face with someone you trust.
