An East Tennessee community college is celebrating a new opportunity for its students.

Walters State Community College and the Oak Ridge National Laboratory have created a partnership.

The agreement will allow students to work with ORNL's scientists to get hands-on experience in research and developing technologies through classroom projects and internships.

Cocke Co. firefighters head south to help Issac relief efforts

Dusting and zipping up gear in his truck, Grassy Fork firefighter Carson Cross is getting ready for a big challenge-- a challenge far away from his Cocke County home.

"I mean we want to help our brothers and sisters," Cross said Wednesday. He is one of six firefighters from Grassy Fork and Cosby that are planning to go to Hancock County, Miss., to help with relief efforts following Tropical Storm Isaac. He said the main goal is to assist the local fire departments in the area.

JEFFERSON CITY, Tenn. (AP) -- Carson-Newman coach Ken Sparks says he never thought about retiring even after learning this summer that he has prostate cancer.

Just over two months after undergoing surgery, Sparks will seek his 300th career coaching victory Thursday when Carson-Newman opens its season against Glenville (W.Va.) State.

Victim in White Pine fatal crash identified

Victim in White Pine fatal crash identified

We now know the name of a man killed in a fiery crash last week.

The accident happened on August 21 in White Pine along State Highway 113, right under the I-40 underpass.

THP says the car was going fast, hit a concrete pillar, and erupted into flames.

Officials had to use dental records to identify the victim.

He is 32-year-old Curtis W. Owenby of Morristown.
