Two pedestrians hit trying to cross I-40 in Cocke County

Update Sunday 2:30 p.m.:

One pedestrian died and another was flown to the hospital Saturday night after they tried to cross the interstate in Cocke County, according to the Tennessee Highway Patrol.

A report stated Joshua Newport and Mary Funkhouser walked out of the wood line near mile marker 447 and were hit by a car while trying to make their way across the road.

Newport was pronounced dead at the scene, Funkhouser was flown to UT Medical Center for treatment. Both are listed as being from near Dayton, Ohio.

The driver told THP he thought the pedestrians were an animal and he swerved to avoid them, but ended up hitting them with the front of his car.

The incident temporarily shutdown westbound I-40, but it was reopened around 10:15 p.m. Saturday.

A crash shut down the westbound lanes of I-40 Saturday night in Cocke County.

Dispatchers told 10News the crash happened at mile marker 447 near the Hartford exit. They said one person was flown from the scene.

Westbound lanes were reopened around 10:15 p.m. The closure had traffic backed up into North Carolina.
