Greene Valley Development Center to close
News

(WBIR - Greene County) A judge ruled Thursday to close the Greene Valley Developmental Center (GVCD), a state-run facility that is home to people with developmental disabilities.

The judge made that decision after hearing both sides state their case in Nashville last week.

People who supported closing Greene Valley said today the decision is a welcome end to state-run asylums in Tennessee. But the families of the approximately 100 people who live there said they are worried about what that means. They said Greene Valley had been a home to many residents for years.

"I had hoped it would go differently," said Brian Bragdon, whose sister is a resident at GVDC. "We will reevaluate and see. nobody has discussed the plan for the transition for the residents including my sister so honestly i really don't know what the next step is."

State officials say those residents will likely be moved from Greene Valley to community-based homes around the state.

The closure also affects the 600 employees at the facility who will lose their jobs when GVDC closes in June 2016.
