Former principal charged with stealing funeral funds
News

A former Greene County elementary school principal is accused of stealing money from a student memorial fund.

According to court documents, Wendy Carpenter was in charge of a fundraiser at Mosheim Elementary school for the funeral that raised about $7,500.

Investigators say the family got some money, but they found a $1,000 in Carpenter's desk and almost $4000 is still unaccounted for.

Carpenter was arrested Monday on charges of theft between a $1,000 and $10,000 dollars.

Carpenter is the former principal at Mosheim Elementary school.

Carpenter oversaw an online fundraiser to cover funeral expenses for Jade Leonard, a 10-year-old Mosheim Elementary student who died in August in an accident.

In the online fundraising page, Carpenter noted that Jade's father was a single dad.

"As a community of friends let's pull together to help him pay for this funeral," Carpenter's message reads. "There was no life insurance, so funeral expenses can be extremely costly. Any donation will be greatly appreciated from all that loved this little boy. Thank you and God bless you all."
