(WBIR) Two people were killed after being involved in two accidents on I-81 Monday morning in Hamblen County.

According to the Tennessee Highway Patrol, the two victims and a third person were in a vehicle that was stalled due to a previous accident, and was sitting crossways in the northbound lane.

A tractor-trailer then slammed into the vehicle on the driver's side. The male driver, a 29-year-old man from Morristown, was killed, along with a female passenger, Elizabeth Velascobautista, 32, of Morristown. Another passenger, Omar Velasco, 27, also of Morristown, was injured.

The driver of the truck was not injured.

The northbound lanes were closed for most of the morning. They have since reopened. As of 2:30 pm, THP has closed the southbound lanes so that the tractor-trailer can be off-loaded. Traffic is being diverted onto an exit ramp and then back on to the interstate. TDOT estimates the road should reopen around 3:10 pm.
