Cocke Co. Lt. resigns after caught delivering drugs on duty

(WBIR-Cocke County) A former Cocke County Sheriff's Department Lieutenant has resigned after an FBI investigation found he was delivering hydrocodone in uniform, on duty.

District Attorney Jimmy Dunn said former Lt. Richard Caldwell entered a guilty plea by information to charges of Delivery of Schedule III substance, which is a Class D felony.

The Cocke County Sheriff, Armando Fontes, said he was informed about two years ago that Caldwell was involved in illegally delivering controlled substances and reached out to the FBI.

"With these facts it is very disheartening that I had to initiate an investigation involving a fellow officer. Based upon the seriousness of the accusations I believe that utilizing the FBI was the appropriate measure to insure an unbiased investigation was conducted," said Fontes, in a press release to 10News.

Fontes said he confronted Caldwell after receiving facts from the FBI's investigation. He said Caldwell decided to resign.

"It is in disappointment that I make this announcement, but it is a necessity that justice is served, public trust is maintained, and the Cocke County Sheriff's Office continues to progress with honor, service, and integrity," said Fontes.

The District Attorney said Caldwell will face a judge for a sentence hearing on Monday, October 7th. Dunn said the class D felony carries a two to four year sentence.
