Cocke Co. authorities take action to prevent spread of illness | Health
The Cocke County Sheriff's Department and health officials say they're trying to prevent the spread of an infectious disease, even if it means taking the woman who has it into custody.
Sheriff Armando Fontes told 10News deputies have been investigating the woman for more than a week after tips that she had signs of an illness and was not seeking treatment.
Authorities aren't releasing the name of the illness, but they do say it spreads through the air and it could be potentially dangerous.
Sheriff Fontes was concerned that if this woman did not get treatment, it could cause a potential outbreak. On Friday, Judge John Bell ordered the sheriff's department to hold the woman in custody and get her proper treatment. He said they moved her to the Newport Medical Center where we're told she is getting the medical attention she needs.
The State Department of Health said this woman is the only patient with this illness right now and they do not expect other people to have it. On Wednesday afternoon, a closed door hearing is scheduled to be held to see if this patient willfully did not get the proper medication she needed to prevent the illness from spreading.
