Greene Co. man pleads guilty to attempted murder

A 44-year-old Greene County man will spend more than a decade in prison.

Harry Joseph Chase entered a guilty plea Wednesday to attempted murder in Greene County Criminal Court.

Chase was put on the TBI's Top 10 Most Wanted list after he shot and seriously wounded Chasity Morton and David Shackelford in August of 2010.

Chase is sentenced to 17 years in state prison.

Jefferson Co. marina owner sentenced for filing false tax returns

A Jefferson County marina owner will serve time behind bars for filing false tax returns.

A judge sentenced 69-year-old Stanley H. Veltkamp Thursday to serve four months in prison followed by one year of supervised release. Veltkamp has already paid more than $80,000 in restitution.

He co-owned Swann's Marina in Jefferson County.

During tax years 2004 through 2008, Veltkamp admitted to paying employees with cash to avoid paying social security and medicare taxes. He also admitted to filing false returns with the IRS.

Argument over a woman ends in a shooting in Morristown

One man is in the hospital and another behind bars following a shooting. It happened Thursday evening at Wildwood Park in Morristown.

Police say the two men met in the park and apparently got into an argument about a woman. Then one pulled out a gun and shot the other in the back.

Police say the suspect fled and later wrecked his car. he is now in custody with minor injuries.

Lifestar flew the victim to UT Medical Center.

No word yet on his condition.

43 arrested in Cocke Co. drug investigation

Forty-three people are facing charges after a five-month investigation targeting pill dealers in Cocke County.

The Cocke County Sheriff's Office says the undercover investigation sought out individuals involved in the sale and distribution of prescription drugs and illegal narcotics.

The sheriff's office says the operation resulted in the seizure of 11 vehicles, approximately 10 pounds of marijuana, more than 2,700 pills, money, more than 200 weapons, and two ounces of crack cocaine.

2 people plead guilty in 2010 White Pine death

Two people have pled guilty in the death of a Jefferson County man.

It's tied to the murder of 77-year-old Johnny Douthat of White Pine back in 2010.

Mary Martin pled guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. That charge carries a 20 year sentence with the possibility of parole.

Dustin Ayers pled guilty to second-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. He faces a 36 year sentence without parole.

Newport man sentenced on drug charges

Newport man sentenced on drug charges

A Newport man will spend 18 years in federal prison for his part in a drug distribution ring.

According to the FBI,  William H. McMahan, Jr., 41, of Newport, Tennessee, was sentenced on August 20 in U.S. District Court at Greeneville, for conspiring to distribute and possessing with the intent to distribute 1,713 kilograms of marijuana, 14 kilograms of cocaine, and 2,705 (30 milligram) oxycodone pills, as well as laundering money.
