Layoffs loom at Morristown office product plant

The Esselte Corporation gathered employees together Tuesday inside their Morristown plant.

Envelopes, pads and wire notebooks are made there.

Production will eventually end at the facility.  Production layoffs will begin in March and end in September, according to Esselte officials.

The distribution center will remain open at that particular location.

The company has not disclosed how many workers will lose their jobs.  The Morristown Area Chamber estimates 100 people work at the facility.

The good news, the chamber said other other industries are eyeing Hamblen County.

"We have a few of those that we're working with closely.  They're a different level of job for the East Tennessee region.  These are higher skill, higher wage.  Currently, we have a few here, but we could definitely use a lot more," said Marshall Ramsey, President of The Morristown Area Chamber of Commerce.

Esselte said the decision to end production in Hamblen County was difficult, but will lead to better efficiency.  The production jobs will be distributed to other plants, including two facilities in Mexico.

Severance packages and job help are planned.
