Jefferson Co. marina owner sentenced for filing false tax returns

A Jefferson County marina owner will serve time behind bars for filing false tax returns.

A judge sentenced 69-year-old Stanley H. Veltkamp Thursday to serve four months in prison followed by one year of supervised release. Veltkamp has already paid more than $80,000 in restitution.

He co-owned Swann's Marina in Jefferson County.

During tax years 2004 through 2008, Veltkamp admitted to paying employees with cash to avoid paying social security and medicare taxes. He also admitted to filing false returns with the IRS.

Argument over a woman ends in a shooting in Morristown

One man is in the hospital and another behind bars following a shooting. It happened Thursday evening at Wildwood Park in Morristown.

Police say the two men met in the park and apparently got into an argument about a woman. Then one pulled out a gun and shot the other in the back.

Police say the suspect fled and later wrecked his car. he is now in custody with minor injuries.

Lifestar flew the victim to UT Medical Center.

No word yet on his condition.

Portion of Cherokee Lake closed after untreated sewage spill

A portion of Cherokee Lake near Morristown is off limits to swimmers after officials estimate around 94,000 gallons of untreated sewage spilled into the lake near Spring Creek.

It happened Monday morning in Morristown around 9:30 a.m. near Olen Marshall Bridge.

Authorities say a hit-and-run driver crashed into guy wires on a power pole on Cherokee Park Road.

The accident caused a power outage on two separate lines going into a sewage pumping station. The raw sewage overflowed into Spring Creek while the pumps were off for 47 minutes.

The shots will be available to patients by the end of the month.

But if you get your shot now, will you be protected all season? The Centers for Disease Control says "yes."

The CDC recommends that people get their shots as soon as possible. It suggests everyone from six months old and older get a yearly vaccine.

Cocke Co. fire crew heads to Miss. for assistance

Some East Tennessee firefighters are on their way to the Gulf region.

The Grassy Fork Volunteer Fire Department in Cocke County has worked with coastal Mississippi firefighters in past storm efforts.

As of Friday evening, they were headed to Hancock County, Mississippi to assist first responders there.

43 arrested in Cocke Co. drug investigation

Forty-three people are facing charges after a five-month investigation targeting pill dealers in Cocke County.

The Cocke County Sheriff's Office says the undercover investigation sought out individuals involved in the sale and distribution of prescription drugs and illegal narcotics.

The sheriff's office says the operation resulted in the seizure of 11 vehicles, approximately 10 pounds of marijuana, more than 2,700 pills, money, more than 200 weapons, and two ounces of crack cocaine.
